In our lives things can get really crazy and quiet at the same time. We are always staring at screens. Worrying about things we do not say out loud. This is where dance comes in. Dance is a way to break free from all this. It is not about moving your body. Dance is like a ceremony that helps us let go of our feelings. It is like a song that heals the hurts we hide in our hearts. Today in the ADTCs Free To Dance Friday series we are very happy to show you a dance tutorial. This dance is, for people who have been dancing for a while. It is a contemporary dance. We will be dancing to the song "Take Me to Church" by Hozier. This dance, made by Elena Vasquez changes the song into something that really gets to you. It is about being vulnerable and finding a way out. If you dance a lot and want to feel something or if you teach and need new ideas this tutorial is for you. It asks you to let the music move you and find that place, inside yourself your inner sanctuary. The dance, made by Elena Vasquez is a thing.

The Song and Its Soul-Stirring Call

Hoziers "Take Me to Church" is not a song. It is a message that says we should not be like everyone else. It is a call to really be ourselves and love what is important to us every day. The song came out in 2013. It has a folk sound with a blues feel and powerful singing. The singing is about feeling alone and feeling connected to people. At the heart of Hoziers "Take Me to Church" is the idea that love can save us. This is similar, to what ADTC believes about dance. It can be very helpful. Make us feel better. In our camps we see girls who're 8 to 17 years old. They start to feel better about themselves. The dances they learn are like life. Sometimes they are sad. It is like a big wave.. Then they get happy and they jump up high. It is like they are in a room and then someone turns on the light. The girls in our camps they learn to dance. It helps them with the hard things in life. The dance classes they are, like a mirror of what the girls go. The girls they get to express themselves. It helps them to not doubt themselves so much.

This dance tutorial is for people who have been dancing for a while. It is 3 minutes and 45 seconds long. The dance moves go with the music, which gets more exciting. Elena made this dance. She was inspired by other dancers like Martha Graham and Pina Bausch. The dance has movements that are inspired by gospel music but it also has slow and strong movements.

Why This Dance Heals: The Therapeutic Rhythm

Dance is really good for people. We have talked about this before in our blogs. For example we said that dance can help people feel less lonely in our story called "How Summer Camp Will Save Us". We also said that dance can help people be their selves in our story called "Unmask Your Truth". Dance is very good for the mind when it is not feeling well. The American Psychological Association has done studies that show how moving to a rhythm can make people feel better. It can even lower the stress levels in our bodies, which can make us feel less anxious.

The breathing and the movements and the release all work together to help us feel better. Elenas tutorial is really helpful because it uses the music to make us feel the emotions and the release. The tutorial is like a journey that Elena takes us on and the music is like the soundtrack, to that journey.

At ADTC we have seen this magic happen in front of us. Imagine a girl from our Colorado location coming to the camp feeling homesick and shy. Then she starts to come out of her shell during the same daily activities. Her quiet dance moves turn into big happy movements with her new friends. This is not a coincidence it is what happens when dance and music come together. This class is not about learning steps it is about feeling the music and letting it bring out emotions that are hard to put into words. At ADTC the music and dance classes are special because they help people like the girl, from our Colorado location to open up and be herself. For teachers this is something that can help start conversations in the classroom about being strong when things get tough.
